BYU School of Music to host Saxophone Chamber Night Nov. 11

The Brigham Young University School of Music will present the Saxophone Chamber Night Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The recital will feature performances by two saxophone quartets with Steve Tobian, Chris Storey, Brian Reschke, Rachelle Reid, Megan Fisher, Skyler Murray, Chad Ostermiller and Randall Brown.

Director D.B. Long expects the recital to be a success, calling the chamber night "a favorite."

"The music performed is fun to listen to," Long said. "Next to the steel drums, the saxophone is the newest of the acoustic instruments. Many consider the sound of the saxophone closest to the plaintive sounds of the human voice. Humans like the sound of their own voices, and they like the sound of the saxophone as well."

The performance will highlight the music of two composers, Gabriel Pierne and Robert Clerisse.

"Both men had connections to the Paris Conservatory," Long said. "Their work has become standard saxophone quartet literature."

Interspersed throughout the program will be arrangements the students have composed as part of their class work.
