BYU Salt Lake Center welcomes campus community to open house Friday, Oct. 12

The Brigham Young University Salt Lake Center will open its doors to new and returning students Fall Semester 2007 at its new home at the Triad Center in downtown Salt Lake City. The BYU Salt Lake Center will host an open house to introduce the new center to the BYU communityon Friday, Oct.12. Tours of the building and the Triad campus will be conducted throughout the day for those who wish to see the facility and become more familiar with its operation.

The campus address is 345 West North Temple, 3 Triad Center, Suite 300, Salt Lake City, UT 84180-1203; the main phone number is 801-933-9400 and its BYU Provo campus phone number is ext. 3-9400.

With the approval of the respective academic departments, the BYU Salt Lake Center offers between 180 and 200 courses each semester to students who choose to take classes there because of smaller class sizes, schedule conflicts or because they live in the Salt Lake area and the center is a more convenient option for them, said director Lee J. Glines.

“The approximately 1,800 students who enroll each semester include both matriculated continuing day students and nontraditional students who have been ecclesiastically cleared and have signed the BYU Honor Code and Dress Code,” he said.

Most of the center’s curriculum is comprised of university core classes, some major core requirements and some elective courses with a high demand.

The BYU Salt Lake Center will include 28 fully mediated classrooms, increasing student-seating capacity from 816 each hour to 1,157. The library will contain both an open computer lab and an instructional computer classroom. The center will include 10 group-study rooms, comfortable student commons areas and parking in a six-level covered terrace.

A mini-conference area will include a pre-function commons room, two seminar rooms and an auditorium. Faculty and staff will make use of increased and more efficient office space.

“The building as a whole captures an openness and a flow of natural lighting that will make its atmosphere comfortable and attractive,” said Glines.

The new location of the BYU Salt Lake Center, noted Glines, places it downtown with many of Salt Lake City’s educational, historical, cultural, spiritual and community attractions. Additionally, access to the center from the freeway, by bus or by the TRAX line is easy and convenient.
