BYU professor honored for excellence in teaching

Spencer Magleby, associate professor and associate chair of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University, was recently honored for his excellence in teaching engineering design.

Magleby received the Fred Merryfield Design Award from the American Society for Engineering Education at a special awards ceremony at the ASEE's annual conference and exposition on June 24 in Nashville, Tenn.

Established in 1981 by CH2M Hill in memory of Fred Merryfield, this award recognizes an engineering educator for excellence in teaching of engineering design and acknowledges other significant contributions related to engineering design teaching.

Magleby's research is centered on improvement of the engineering design process as part of product development. His research includes design processes, use and integration of computer tools, use of CAD in design, design team formation and interactions and interdisciplinary issues.

He also investigates methods for teaching design and creative environments to foster excellent design.

Many of Magleby's developments are put to use in the college's student design and development teams at BYU as well as other educational programs throughout the country.
