BYU professor emeritus receives top honor from German government

Randall L. Jones, professor emeritus of German and former dean of the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University, has received a Bundesverdienstkreuz Award presented by Wolfgang Drautz, Los Angeles Consul General for the Federal Republic of Germany.

The award, which translates as the Federal Cross of Merit, is the German government’s top honor presented to a non-German citizen. It was signed by German President Horst Köhler.

Jones was honored for his distinguished career in teaching, publishing and promoting the modern German language, a career that began with his experiences as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern Germany in the 1960s and spanned more than four decades.

He was nominated for the honor by Stanford University’s William Petig.

Reading from the nomination as well as from letters from Jones’ students and colleagues, Drautz praised Jones’ respect for his students and his passion for the German language.
