BYU presents "An Evening of Percussion" April 7

The Brigham Young University School of Music will host "An Evening of Percussion" Saturday, April 7,  7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall

The event will feature performances by the Percussion Ensemble and Panoramic Steel directed by Ron Brough and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu directed by Jeremy Grimshaw.

For tickets, visit the Fine Art Ticket Office, byuarts.com/tickets, or call 801-422-4322.

The Percussion Ensemble will present two numbers. "Away without Leave" by Bob Becker, a drum medley dedicated to Steve Gadd, is a lullaby that alternates between a traditional samba rhythm and a generic military-style drum beating with a highly syncopated bass drum accompaniment.

"Kalabash" by Nigel Westlake was written 20 years ago as  a work for two percussionists and bass clarinet that evolved to include influences from African balofone music.

Panoramic Steel will be joined by the Lamont Steel Drum Ensemble directed by Tom Miller for several numbers, including "Don’t Dread the ‘Nati" by Chris Tanner and "People are People" by Ray Holman.

Gamelan Bintang Wahyu, a unique group that uses traditional Balinese instruments, will perform two traditional numbers as well as a contemporary work, "Hujan Mas (Golden Rain)" by I Gede Purana.

For more information, contact Ron Brough at 801-422-3320.
