BYU presents Ballet Showcase Nov. 22-23

Highlighting the graceful movements of dance, the Brigham Young University Ballet Showcase will present two evenings of dance Friday and Saturday (Nov. 22 and 23) at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building.

Tickets at $5 are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or www.byu.edu/hfac. They may also be purchased at the door prior to the performance.

The BYU Ballet Showcase Company members have a highly developed technique that comes across with artistry and energy as they perform classical, contemporary and humorous premiere works, according to Lynne Thompson of the BYU ballet faculty.

Shani Robison, Ballet Showcase Company director, choreographed the opening piece "Classic Charm" featuring soloist Sarah Robertson. An inviting overture sets the tone for this warm, lighthearted classical ballet set to light, uplifting music by Strauss.

Accented with beautiful short, white tutus, the flirtatious moments within the piece give it personality and flair.

"By the end of this delightfully expressive work, there will be no way to tell who had more fun-the audience or the dancers!" said Thompson.

How does "Swan Lake" turn into "I Love Rock n Roll?" A pas de deux with a jazzy twist features choreographer and dancer Jenny Bawden partnered with Adam Miele.

Both BYU Theatre Ballet dancers, Bawden and Miele bring their amazing technique and artistry to this student choreographic project.

"The Audition" choreographed by Marsha Russell gives a fun, whimsical peek into a ballet audition and the personalities of the attending dancers all set to the delightful music of Rossini.

"Broken Links," a contemporary ballet with soloist Brigette Petersen, is set to music by Osamu Kitajima and delves into the complexity of personal relationships and how often those whom we trust leave us to travel on an often empty, lonely path.

A beautiful piano composition by composer Darren Isaacs prompted BYU Theatre Ballet Director Jennie Creer-King to create "Eccentric Bloom" depicting the many facets of relationships. Featuring dancers in beautiful romantic style costumes, this piece has a unique lighting design that illuminates a feeling of a storm with movements that never seem to stop flowing.

"Eccentric Bloom" features all of the members of Ballet Showcase, with Brigette Petersen and Kristen Thompson sharing the leads along with Rob Cox.
