BYU posts activities commemorating Black History Month

Multicultural Student Services at Brigham Young University will sponsor several events during February and the beginning of March in celebration of Black History Month.

Thursday, Feb. 9

  • Students from the BYUSA Black Student Union will speak in a panel discussion titled “Race and Ethnicity: An In-Depth Discussion” at 11 a.m. in 3380 Wilkinson Student Center. Admission is free. Friday, Feb. 10

  • The fifth annual “Blues Night and Poetry Jam” will take place from 8:30-11:30 p.m. in the WSC Ballroom. Local band Afterhours will perform jazz and blues music, and participants will have an opportunity to play with the band and read poetry from African American artists. Admission is $2 with BYU student ID and $4 without. Thursday, Feb. 16

  • Matthew Mason, an assistant professor of history, will address students about the origins and social implications of slavery in “Slavery or Racism: Which Came First?” at 11 a.m. in 3380 WSC. Admission is free.

  • The Black History Month film, “Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives,” will be shown at 7 p.m. in 3380 WSC. Those in attendance will be invited to participate in a discussion following the film. Admission is free. Thursday, Feb. 23

  • Darius Gray of the LDS Genesis Group will discuss the history of African Americans in the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the priesthood at 11 a.m. in 3224 WSC. Admission is free. Saturday, Feb. 25

  • The African American Children’s Fair will run from 1-5 p.m. in the WSC Garden Court. The event provides resources for parents who have adopted African American children. Admission is free. Thursday, March 2

  • A Brown v. Board of Education roundtable will be at 11 a.m. in 3220 WSC. The panel will feature BYU professors discussing the modern effects of the landmark court decision and its impact on society. Admission is free. The BYUSA Black Student Union meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in 3223 WSC. The meetings are free and open to the public.

    Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

    For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
