BYU plans OcTUBAfest activities Oct. 27-30

Brigham Young University hosts the 15th annual OcTUBAfest with guest artist Adam Frey Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 27-30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

"OcTUBAfest is a celebration of the magnificent tuba family of instruments," said Steve Call, director of OcTUBAfest. "This includes all kinds of low brass instruments, including the euphonium, and gives us a chance to promote and educate about the wonderful low brass instruments."

OcTUBAfest is an annual event on college and university campuses nationwide, conceptualized by Indiana University professor emeritus Harvey Phillips, who Call credits as the most important figure in promoting the tuba.

Guest artist Frey is one of the world's leading euphonium soloists. He received his master of music degree from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. He has performed with several distinguished orchestral ensembles including the Boston Pops.

This year Call will open the four-day OcTUBAfest on Wednesday with a faculty recital in which he will play the tuba and euphonium. He will be assisted by members of the faculty brass quintet "Brassworks."

A tuba and euphonium student recital will continue the concert series on Thursday night.

The Utah Premiere Brass will perform with guest artist Frey on Friday night.

The concert series will end Saturday night with the BYU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble performing under the direction of Call.
