BYU plans annual OcTUBAfest Oct. 22-25

Brigham Young University will host the 14th annual OcTUBAfest Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 22-25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The performance is free and the public is welcome to attend.

The four-part concert series directed by BYU professor of music Steve Call will feature works for tuba, sousaphone, euphonium and baritone.

"One of my missions is to promote the tuba and members of the tuba family, including the euphonium," Call said. "My purpose is to put those instruments out front and show the potential for them to play melodically."

OcTUBAfest is an annual event on college and university campuses nationwide, conceptualized by Indiana University Professor Emeritus Harvey Phillips, who Call credits as the most important figure in promoting the tuba.

This year's four-day festival will include several solo and ensemble pieces, as well as a guest conductor.

OcTUBAfest opens Wednesday, Oct. 22, with a student tuba recital.

Thursday's performance is Call's faculty recital, with solo tuba and euphonium pieces with Brassworks, BYU's faculty brass ensemble.

Friday, Oct. 24, will be a presentation by Utah Premiere Brass led by Alan Boyer, a British-style brass band featuring Call, Joe Jensen and Dan Bachelder.

The final performance Saturday, Oct. 25, will be the Grand OcTUBAfest Concert with guest conductor Todd Sigel.
