BYU plans activities to celebrate America Recycles Day Nov. 14

Brigham Young University students and faculty are invited to learn how to become better stewards of the earth during BYU’s celebration of America Recycles Day Wednesday, Nov. 14.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, a lecture on environmental stewardship and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as a panel discussion on environmental ethics with BYU faculty members will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Tuesday through Thursday, Nov. 13-15, the BYU EcoResponse Club will host booths from 10 a.m. to noon in Brigham Square, where visitors can learn how to live more environmentally friendly lives. Club members will distribute handouts on alternative energy sources and where to recycle in Provo.

Also in Brigham Square, visitors can see large bales of compressed paper and aluminum that BYU Recycling produces. BYU recycles white paper, colored and mixed paper, newspaper, cardboard and soda cans, as well as specialty items like books, green waste, batteries, fluorescent lights, computers and toner cartridges. After collecting, sorting and baling these items, they are sold to recycling companies, saving BYU thousands of dollars each year.

Blue recycling bins are located in every building on campus. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the simple opportunity to put recyclables in the blue cans instead of in the garbage.
