BYU plans 12th Annual Inquiry Conference March 16-19

Students to present international research

The 12th Annual Inquiry Conference will take place at Brigham Young University Tuesday through Friday, March 16-19, in 238 Herald R. Clark Building, hosted by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

The conference is a forum for students to present their field research on a variety of subjects, including international development, social change, the environment and human development. The students have conducted research in five different continents throughout the past year.

The event will be open to the public and will be archived online. A full schedule can be viewed at kennedy.byu.edu/events/inquiry.

Besides student presentations and question-and-answer panels, the conference will also feature three keynote speakers. Benjamin G. Unguren, a theatre and media arts instructor, will be speaking Wednesday at noon. His subject will be “Reflexivity through Reciprocity: The Value of Returning to Participants in Ethnography and Film.”

The second keynote speaker will be Carol Ward on Thursday at 2 p.m. Ward is an associate professor of sociology at BYU. She will be speaking on “Using the Indigenous Evaluation Framework to Assess Projects in Developing Communities: Examples from Africa and Native America.”

Gideon O. Burton, assistant professor of English will be speaking Friday at 1 p.m. Burton’s lecture is titled, “Social Inquiry: Leveraging Field Studies with New Media.”

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
