BYU pianists perform in finals for concerto competition Jan. 5

Seven top Brigham Young University pianists from the School of Music will perform in the finals for the the piano division of the annual Concerto Competition Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 8 p.m in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

"In a previous event, we heard 20 students perform concerti, and chose seven of them to perform in this recital" said Scott Holden of the BYU piano faculty. "We will choose from the best of them and send them on to represent the piano area for an opportunity to perform during the Evening of Concertos with the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra."

The students — Lucy Williams, Yurika Taura, Forrest Howell, Arianne Sam, Jonathan Keith, Janessa Swenson and Camille Balleza — will perform works by Rachmaninov, Grief, Liszt, Beethoven, Khachaturian and Chopin.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
