BYU philosophy professor praised by Times Literary Supplement

A philosophy professor at Brigham Young University was praised by the Times Literary Supplement for his new book on early Greek philosophy.

Author and critic George Steiner called Daniel W. Graham’s recently published “The Texts of Early Greek Philosophy” from Cambridge University Press “a monumental feat.”  One of the world’s leading literary reviews, the TLS is published weekly by the Times of London.

Graham’s publication is a two-volume work that collects the surviving quotations of the earliest Greek philosophers along with ancient reports about them.

Until now, a collection like this has only been available in German through a work published by Hermann Diels in 1903 and later edited by Walther Kranz, and that collection did not offer any recently discovered texts. Graham has brought the collection up to date, reorganized it to make it clearer and supplied commentary and bibliographies on each ancient philosopher.

“I hope that this work will make the earliest philosophers more accessible to students of philosophy,” said Graham, who is the A. O. Smoot Professor of Philosophy and the chair of the Department of Philosophy at BYU, where he conducts research in ancient Greek philosophy and science.
