BYU Philharmonic plans concert Feb. 22

Preview for orchestra's performance at upcoming national convention

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the Philharmonic Orchestra in concert featuring the BYU Faculty String Quartet on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are $9 with $3 off with a BYU or student ID. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322.

The orchestra will perform Act III of "Lohengrin" by Richard Wagner, "Introduction and Allegro" by Edward Elgar which will feature the BYU Faculty String Quartet and the Concerto for Orchestra by Bela Bartok.

"The showcase piece for the program is Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra," said Kory Katseanes, director of the Philharmonic Orchestra. "It is one the most important pieces ever composed for orchestra. Not many universities would try to tackle this piece because it is so difficult."

The concert acts as a preview for the orchestra's performance on Feb. 24 in Reno, NV, where they will perform by invitation at the American String Teachers Association National Conference.

The Philharmonic Orchestra is one of only two universities invited to perform in the national conference. Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra will also perform at the conference.

"We're excited and thrilled to be invited, because ASU is good company. We feel the invitation is, in a sense, an evaluation or peer review of the orchestra," Katseanes said. "ASU is among the most respected orchestras in the West and it is gratifying to be in the same group with them."

The Philharmonic Orchestra's mission is to perform the greatest masterpieces of the symphonic literature. The orchestra consists almost entirely of music majors, both undergraduate and graduate students.

For more information contact Kory Katseanes at (801) 422-3331.
