BYU percussion groups plan family-oriented concerts Nov. 5

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents the Percussion Ensemble, Panoramic Steel and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu for two special family performances Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are available at $6 for adults and $4 for children up to age 11. For tickets, visit the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or byuarts.com/tickets.

The performance will begin with two numbers by the Percussion Ensemble directed by Ron Brough. Their first selection, “Marimba Heritage,” is an original composition by Brough that honors the history of solo marimba literature.  Motives from many well-known marimba solos are woven into this new composition.

Second on the program is Gamelan Bintang Wahyu, an ensemble of musicians from across the BYU community. They are dedicated to learning and performing the traditional and contemporary music of Bali, a small but artistically rich island in the Indonesian peninsula. The ensemble was founded in 2008 by Jeremy Grimshaw and performs on instruments hand-crafted by Balinese tuners and carvers in the shop of I Wayan Beratha, Bali’s most revered composer and instrument builder.

The performance ends with three songs by Panoramic Steel directed by Brough, including Ray’s Medley” by Ray Holman.

For more information contact Ron Brough at (801) 422-3320 or at ronald_brough@byu.edu
