BYU Percussion Ensemble, Panoramic Steel in concert March 26

The Brigham Young University School of Music presents Panoramic Steel and Percussion Ensemble Friday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Tickets at $9 and $3 off with a BYU or student ID are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

The program, directed by Ron Brough, will feature music by Thomas Gauger, Mark Ford, Christopher Rouse, Tom Miller, Rick Kurasz and Andy Narell.

"It's a visual feast as well as an aural feast," Brough said. "The fact that you get to see it performed helps one identify a sound with a sight."

The Percussion Ensemble will play a series of chamber music pieces without a conductor, and music will range from orchestral with symphonic tendencies to a very dramatic piece about a Polynesian god of war. The Percussion Ensemble will also perform a piece called "Heads Up!" using old bass drum heads and utilizing choreographed and improvised movement.

"For anyone who has ever seen 'Stomp,' this is a piece along those lines," Brough said. "It's a hoot."

The Panoramic Steel Ensemble will also feature a wide variety of music with calypso, a romantic ballad and an African-inspired piece.

Members of the Percussion Ensemble include Kandis Bender, Darren Bastian, Celeste Cope, Kevin Meyer, Eric Mortenson, Steven Clayton, John Black, Breanne Jesse and Jenne West.

Members of the Panoramic Steel Ensemble include Kandis Bender, David Zimmerman, John Black, Jeff Butler, Celeste Cope, Kevin Meyer, Jenne West, Breanne Jesse, Jason Standring, Sarah Hales, Ben Bolin, Abby Lindenlaub, Aric Farnsworth, Andrew Ferguson, Aaron Stewart, Whitney Heller, Jordan Lindsay and Katrina Bagley.
