BYU Office of Academic Internships awards more than $100,000 in grants

The Office of Academic Internships recently awarded more than $100,000 to 13 departments and schools at Brigham Young University through its enhancement grant program for the development and expansion of department internship programs.

The annual funds are open to all departments which have an established internship program. Departments can request up to $10,000 per year to use for enhancing existing programs.

The enhancement grants are awarded at the discretion of the faculty Committee on Academic Internships. Criteria include a department commitment to academic internships, a minimum amount of experience hours in the internship, fulfillment of specific academic and administrative standards and a suitable work experience for students.

The following departments and schools received enhancement grant funds:

  • Psychology: $10,000

  • Linguistics and English language: $2,945

  • Social Work: $10,000

  • Physical Education: $9,600

  • Microbiology and Molecular Biology: $10,000

  • Manufacturing Leadership Forum: $10,000

  • Biology: $10,000

  • Health Science: $9,750

  • Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology: $2210.50

  • Visual Arts: $10,000

  • David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies: $9,310

  • Marriage, Family and Human Development: $10,000 The enhancement grants are funded through the Semester Away program in the BYU Continuing Education Division.

Students who enroll through Continuing Education for their academic internship credit have their tuition divided into amounts of 30 and 70 percent.

Thirty percent is kept by Continuing Education, while the remaining 70 percent is sent to the Office of Academic Internships. The office uses 30 percent to fund the Enhancement Grant program, which is in its third year of operation.

The number and amount of awards given each year varies based on the number of students who enroll for internships through continuing education.

The Office of Academic Internships supports 80 campus departments in establishing and maintaining individual internship programs.
