BYU offers writing camps for children, teens and adults

Aspire to be a writer? This summer, BYU is offering 8-weeklong writing camps where you can learn to let your imagination and the written word take you wherever you’d like to go.

All the camps include 5 half-days of instruction, writing and classroom materials, a T-shirt and snacks. Most include visits from guest authors. The camps are sponsored by BYU’s College of Humanities and Division of Continuing Education.

For children in elementary school
Discover art in a whole new way in Exploring Art Through Writing, a weeklong half-day summer camp for grades 5-9. Use writing and basic sketching to explore the nature, history and beauty of traditional and modern art, natural and manmade.

Join The Authors Club to explore writing and become a writer. Learn where story ideas come from and why Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos is so much fun to read. This camp is for students entering the 5th or 6th grades.

Nature of Writing will take those entering the 3rd and 4th grades outside to explore the BYU campus in search of the sights, smells and sounds of summer. Students will use art and writing to create a masterpiece.

For students in junior high or high school
Love to write, but not always sure where to put a comma or dash? In Grammar Wings you’ll learn to use basic punctuation and grammar to create powerful phrases, interesting sentences, and great stories. This camp is for grades 7-9.

Get hooked on creative writing this summer with the Reel in Creativity writing camp. Students entering grades 7-9 will learn to see the world differently, experiment with new ideas and discover hidden talents.

Want to build your own website? Hackasaurus , for grades 8-12, will help you learn how to use HTML tags to reinvent and make web pages of your own. By the end of this camp, you’ll have the tools to build your own website.

Storm the Gates! is a specialized boot camp for advanced students (grades 9-11) who want to rocket-propel themselves into college writing. Learn to master timed essays for the AP, ACT, and SAT exams; write a compelling, completely non-cheesy selfie statement for college admissions; and feel like a pro in a college writing class. Instructor Brian Jackson directs the BYU Freshman Writing Program and will give students tips and tricks to succeed in writing in college.

For Adults
Making Memories will help adults (18 and older) discover how to get their memories down on paper and do in in style. This camp will help you explore the writer within by waking up your memories and giving you the tools you need to make them come to life.
