BYU offers online learning resources through IT services

Online learning resources, including videos and interactive tutorials, are available on Brigham Young University campus for the first time this semester.

Videos covering a broad range of computer technology topics are available through a Web browser thanks to a donation from Makau Corporation, a local training company. Also available through the Web on campus are several interactive tutorials created by Microsoft for its Office Suite.

The Makau Video Learning Library contains training on more than 40 topics. Students can watch these videos from any Web browser over a high-speed Internet connection. Many of the courses provide online assessments to help gauge progress. Study guides also accompany most courses, which can be viewed online or printed.

These new online programs offer computer certification preparation courses, the popular Microsoft Certified System Engineer certification and other certifications such as Network+ or Security+. This video resource can be used by any current BYU student or employee with a valid Net ID and password.

The university has an extensive site license with Microsoft that includes online training materials. Several books available for online viewing are fully searchable as a reference point for those working with Microsoft software.

Because the tutorials include screen simulations, students can learn the software without having it installed on their computers. This resource is available from any on-campus computer. It requires the Internet Explorer Web browser, which is included with recent versions of Microsoft Windows. The program will not work from off-campus computers due to licensing restrictions.

For more information about these resources, visit it.byu.edu/training and select the "Online Learning" link.
