BYU Nelke Theatre production celebrates "Flight"

One hundred years of flight will be celebrated in the production of Oscar Saul and Louis Lantz's "Flight" to be presented in the Nelke Experimental Theatre at Brigham Young University.

"Flight" opens Friday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m., with previews Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 11 and 12. Performances will be held Tuesdays through Saturdays through Feb. 21. Matinee performances will be Saturday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m.

Tickets at $12 with $3 off with a BYU or student ID are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

Directed by Dean Duncan and Amy Jensen, "Flight" is an educational play that was developed for the Federal Theatre Project. It is presented in the format of a living newspaper, a popular theatre style used in 1930s America.

"The original text is enhanced by personal stories, poetry, historical radio programming and video projections," Jensen said. "It is an attempt to honor the history behind the play’s original text as well as the history of flight.”

"Flight" focuses on the stories of the progenitors and participants in the progress of flight, including Daedalus and Icarus, Leonardo da Vinci, the Wright brothers and Charles Lindbergh.

"This play is about flight, and it’s got a lot of great flying stories in it," Duncan said. "It’s also got a lot of true things in it. It has stories that people invented and things that really happened, and it tries lots of different ways to tell us about them all.”

The show is geared for students in grades 4-8, and is intended to be educational as well as entertaining.

"'Flight' suggests human possibility, aspiration, accomplishment and even failure,” Jensen said. "Whether we fly by mechanical apparatus or with imagined wings, the idea of flight encourages us to move from the ground to something beyond our own horizon.”

Cast members are Eleanor Rossell, Kristen Haskell Sansom, Caitlin Wise, Amanda R. Von Der Lohe, Kimmy Howington, Megan Pugmire, Kim Hansen and Meredith A. Bak.

The production staff includes dramaturg Roz Astle, production stage manager Samuel M. Anderson, scenic cesigner Heidi Hicken, costume and makeup designer Emily Fickenwirth, assisted by Faith Mickley, assistant stage manager Sylvia Loehndorf, media coordinator Tyler Weston, media compiler Mark Ellsworth, and media researcher Meredith Bak.
