BYU lists activities for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Jan. 21

On Monday, Jan. 21, Brigham Young University will host a Community Outreach Day and the annual Walk of Life to commemorate the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

More than 900 volunteers are expected to attend Community Outreach Day, which will begin at 9 a.m. with refreshments and a devotional in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom. Students are invited to devote the remainder of the day to service with on-campus service opportunities such as assembling children's school kits, painting toy cars and preparing for the evening's Walk of Life.

Students, church organizations and large groups can pre-register to participate in these projects by sending an e-mail to communityoutreachday@byu.edu or signing up the day of the event.

The community is invited to participate in the Walk of Life, which will begin with a candlelight procession at the Carillon Bell Tower at 5:30 p.m. The procession will walk to the Wilkinson Student Center, where a program will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The keynote speaker for the program will be Pastor France A. Davis from the Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City. Pastor Davis associated with King himself — he marched during the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march and was present for the famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The program will also feature video highlights from that speech, as well as musical numbers performed by BYU Jazz Voices.
