BYU Lee Library exhibit features work by Welsh convert John Davis

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library is hosting an exhibition of rare Welsh Mormon publications by John Davis, an early convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The free exhibit, featuring works authored, translated and printed by Davis along with a brief movie about his life, will be available until Oct. 1 on the library’s first level.

Davis learned of the Church and became convinced of the truth of its doctrine in 1846 while proofreading and setting type at a print shop that was producing Church publications, said Larry Draper, curator for Special Collections.

Only three years later, Davis was called to do all printing for the Church in Wales. During the next five years, Davis wrote 20 pamphlets, edited six volumes (2,352 pages) of the periodical Udgorn Seion (Zion’s Trumpet), and translated the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price into Welsh.
