BYU Lee Library Civil War Exhibit to host free screening of "Santa Fe Trail" Oct. 5

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham  Young University will present a one-time only screening of “Santa Fe Trail” Friday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. in the library auditorium in conjunction with the L. Tom Perry Special Collections exhibit “Voices of the Civil War” celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

“Santa Fe Trail,” is a 1940 Warner Bros. feature that dramatizes the life of controversial abolitionist John Brown. The film stars Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and future U.S. President Ronald Reagan, all of whom are involved in the Union Cavalry’s pursuit of Brown and his seizing the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry.

Prominent stage actor Raymond Massey gives a chillingly fanatical interpretation of Brown that Variety wrote “is the outstanding characterization in the film.”

James D’Arc, curator of the BYU Motion Picture Archive, will host the screening and will provide behind-the-scenes information on the making of “Santa Fe Trail.”
