BYU law professor to be nominated for Indian Affairs post

U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday announced his intent to nominate Larry EchoHawk, who teaches criminal law and federal Indian law at Brigham Young University, to join the administration.

The following statement is from BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson:

We are very pleased by President Obama’s announcement today that he intends to nominate BYU professor Larry EchoHawk as the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. A member of the Pawnee Nation, Professor EchoHawk has a long and devoted history of public service. Since his days on the BYU varsity football team, where he garnered not only athletic honors but Academic ALL-WAC First Team honors as well, to his achievements as a professor of law, Larry EchoHawk has earned the respect of all who have worked with him. At BYU he is greatly admired by his colleagues and students for his leadership, his practical wisdom, his legal expertise and, perhaps most importantly, his willingness to tackle and work toward solving difficult issues. Professor EchoHawk is a superb choice for Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs.
