BYU Jazz Voices plan Christmas sets in Dec. 1 recital

Jazz Voices, Brigham Young University’s premier vocal jazz ensemble, will be performing Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Tickets for the event are available through byuarts.com or the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322. All seats cost $6.

Jazz Voices is comprised of 14 student-singers from across the university. They have received national acclaim for their tight harmonies, rhythmic accuracy, improvisation and scatting abilities.

“This performance will include a few holiday favorites,” said Allen Matthews, the group’s director. “We’ll also perform pieces by George Gershwin, Clifford Brown, Pat Matheny, Thad Jones, New York Voices, Take Six and other jazz greats.”

The group will be performing Christmas classics like “Let It Snow,” “A Child is Born,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

The group performs all styles of jazz including blues, bebop, swing, funk and Latin. Some music is sung a cappella, and other arrangements utilize the group's piano, guitar, bass and drum accompaniment.
