BYU Jazz Showcase takes the de Jong Concert Hall stage Oct. 2

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present the annual Jazz Showcase Thursday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine arts Center.

All tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting byuarts.com.

The BYU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mark Ammons, will perform “What is Hip” by Tower of Power, “Cabeza de Carne” by Matt Harris and “The Unhumdrum,” an original composition by BYU faculty member Lyle Durland.

The Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band, directed by Steve Call, will perform three New Orleans-style pieces: “Eccentric Rag” by Russel Robinson, “Tiger Rag” by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and “Kansas City Stomp” by Jelly Roll Morton.

Ray Smith will direct the popular jazz big band group Synthesis as they present “Caravan” by Duke Ellington and “Things to Come” by Dizzy Gillespie.
