BYU Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band plans free performance Nov. 4

Brigham Young University’s Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band will join with guest guitarist and banjo player Katie Cavera on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The concert is free.

Conducted by Steve Call, the group will perform a number of jazz songs by Duke Ellington, Ben Bernie, Irving Berlin, Joe “King” Oliver, Bud Green and many others.

Cavera has made a name for herself in the United States and Europe playing ‘20s and ‘30s classic jazz. Originally from southern Indiana, she attended Indiana University and studied jazz performance and composition.

She has worked with Jug Band legend Jim Kweskin, Jim Cullum’s Jazz Band in San Antonio, Texas, and members of Turk Murphy’s Jazz Band. Jazz critics have dubbed her the “California Sunshine Girl” because of her upbeat singing style and sunny stage personality. She works regularly in the Los Angeles area and plays traditional jazz festivals up and down the West Coast, both in bands and as a guest artist.

BYU’s Dixieland Band has performed at multiple international jazz festivals, earning them an international reputation as quality performers. The band features clarinet, trombone, trumpet, piano, banjo, drums and bass playing music from the influential ‘20s and ‘30s.

For more information, contact Steve Call at (801) 422-6116, stevecall@byu.edu, or visit www.katiecavera.com.
