BYU Jazz Lab Band presents big band sounds Dec. 3

The Brigham Young University Jazz Lab Band will perform big band music under the direction of Daniel Henderson Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The band will open the concert with "Indian Lady" by Don Ellis.

"It's a late-1960s swing number in a fast 5/4 time signature, complete with Fender-Rhodes piano, congas, and quarter-tone trumpet solos," Henderson said. "We have a ball every time we rehearse it!"

Other pieces they will play include "Hello Goodbye" by Bob Brookmeyer, "Your Father's Moustache" by Bill Harris and Woody Herman and "Winter Wonderland" by Felix Bernard.

The last number, "Winter Wonderland," takes listeners on a trip around the world. It starts with "Winter Wonderland" and leads to other songs from around the world. After a stop in ancient China, the tour comes to an abrupt halt and returns to the "Winter Wonderland" theme.

"This will be one of the funnest concerts I've ever been involved with at BYU," Henderson said.

The Jazz Lab Band was designed for those who are serious musicians with busy schedules. The band meets in the evening to accommodate those who want to participate in the band.
