BYU Jazz Festival Feb. 29-March 3 promises variety of uptempo sounds

The Brigham Young University School of Music will host the BYU Jazz Festival featuring BYU Jazz Voices, Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band, Synthesis Big Band and more Wednesday, Feb. 29, to Saturday, March 3.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 29 — The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Mark Ammons, and Jazz Voices, directed by Allen Matthews, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.
  • Thursday, March 1— The Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band, directed by Steve Call, will joining with the Trombone Choir, directed by Will Kimball, guest artist Dan Barrett on trombone and "Seventy-Six Trombones."
  • Friday and Saturday, March 2-3 — The Synthesis Jazz Festival Grand Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

This year marks the beginning of BYU's participation in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, a noncompetitive regional festival designed to offer high school jazz bands of all levels the opportunity to perform the music of Duke Ellington and other seminal big band composers and to receive professional feedback from Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians and other jazz professionals in their own communities.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
