BYU Jazz Voices is well known for their tight harmonies, style and outstanding improvisational abilities. The group’s repertoire includes a variety of jazz and jazz sub-genres from 1920 to today.

“BYU Jazz Voices is a breath of fresh air to audiences of all kinds,” Jazz Voices director Emily Merrell said. “This outstanding ensemble is known for its complex harmonies, tight grooves, improvisation and unique combination of vocalists and instrumentalists; there is something here for everyone!”

Jazz Voices is a group of 11 singers coupled with a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums. The group performs accompanied by a piano, guitar, bass and drum as well as a cappella.

Jazz Voices performer, Tanner Linton, has been a vocalist with the group for several years. Linton said the performance is unique as the instruments and vocalists are equal group members and not simply “singers and accompanists.”

“The relationship is more than just one of singers and their accompanists,” Linton said. “Although we have a cappella songs in our repertoire each semester, [Merrell] always likes to have a rhythm section feature as well for the instrumentalists.”

BYU Jazz Ensemble performs locally and regionally and is focused on training up-and-coming jazz musicians. Audition only, the ensemble is a traditional jazz big band comprised of five saxophones, four trombones, five trumpets and a rhythm section that plays music from the big band era of the 1940s to the early 2000s. This will be the first of two performances for the group this semester, the second being a solo performance for the Jazz Ensemble on March 15.

“The concert will be a night filled with memorable songs from the Great American Song Book,” Mark Ammons, Jazz Ensemble director said. “This will be a great way to warm your Valentine’s heart.”

Audience members can expect to hear a variety of jazz sub-genres including blues, swing, bebop, Latin, funk and fusion. Jazz Voices and Jazz Ensemble originates in the School of Music of the College of Fine Arts and Communications at BYU.
