BYU hosts "Walk of Life," service projects to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

Brigham Young University will host several events Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

• BYU’s Center for Service and Learning will hold its annual Community Outreach Day beginning at 9 a.m. Participants can register from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom for service projects throughout the day. There will be blood drives, quilt making, hat making, projects with LDS Humanitarian Services and United Way of Utah County.

Registration will continue until 9 a.m. when there will be an opening devotional. Peter M. Johnson, assistant professor of accountancy at BYU, will be the speaker.

• BYU’s Multicultural Student Services will host the annual “Walk of Life: A Celebration of the Life and Mission of Martin Luther King Jr.” A candlelight processional will begin at the Carillon Bell Tower at 5:30 p.m. The processional will include important quotes and sound bites from King’s life.

The processional will work its way to the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom where the main program will begin at 6 p.m. Ahmad S. Corbitt, director of the New York Office of Public and International Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will be speaking. He regularly represents the Church at the United Nations and other international activities. He was a vice president of Coltrin & Associates, a public relations firm in the United States, Europe and Asia.
