BYU hosts Utah Tap Caucus workshops, concert April 26

In celebration of National Tap Dance Day, the Utah Tap Caucus will present tap class workshops and an evening performance at Brigham Young University Saturday, April 26.

The tap class workshops will be between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will feature classes for beginning- and intermediate-level tap students age 12 and up. Classes will cost $10 each or $25 for three classes and will be taught throughout the day.

Following the workshops, an evening concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre (166 Richards Building). This performance will showcase some of the most skilled percussive dancers in the community and encompass an array of tap styles.

The concert is free to those registered for the entire day's workshops and $5 for all others.

Registrations, tickets and further information are available by contacting Colleen West at (801) 422-3104, colleen_west@byu.edu or Deborah Robertson at (801) 595-1863.

Deborah Robertson, a member of the dance faculty at Salt Lake Community College and a recipient of a Utah Arts Council individual artist grant, will teach the techniques of Brenda Bufalino.

West, director of BYU's tap program and the Utah representative for the International Tap Association, will cover the style of Steve Condos. Studio-owner and tap teacher Janet Gray will demonstrate the rhythmic articulation and speed of Eddie Brown.

Congress enacted National Tap Dance Day in 1989 to honor the art of tap dancing as a cultural representation of the heritage of our nation and its wide-ranging influence on many genres of American art.

The UTC was formed in 2002 to celebrate, promote and advance the art of tap dance in the local community.
