BYU hosts Utah News Seminar Sept. 30

Brigham Young University will attract student and professional journalists from throughout the state for the third annual Utah News Seminar Friday, Sept. 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free and student and professional journalists are welcome to attend.

“The Utah News Seminar provides students and professionals an opportunity to improve and refresh their skills,” said Kaylene Armstrong, editorial director of the BYU Daily Universe and coordinator of Utah News Seminar. “This seminar also provides a forum to consider some of the issues that journalists face, such as freedom of information and reporter privilege.”

After registration in 140 Joseph Smith Building, a panel discussion titled “Covering Katrina: A Look at How the Media Reported on the Disaster” will commence the seminar.

Following the keynote address, workshops will be presented in the Maeser and Brimhall Buildings by editors and writers from several newspapers and publications, including the Deseret Morning News, Daily Herald, Associated Press and Salt Lake Tribune.

News professionals will address topics such as ethics, photography, design, column writing, interviewing and feature writing.

The seminar will close with a panel discussion on the Freedom of Information Act and Reporter Shield Laws.

This event is sponsored by the Department of Communications and the Daily Universe. For more information, contact Kaylene Armstrong at (801) 422-3840.
