BYU hosts Symposium on Books for Young Readers July 16-17

Six nationally known authors and illustrators will share their unique perspectives on children’s literature during the 22nd Annual Brigham Young University Symposium on Books for Young Readers Thursday and Friday, July 16 and 17.

The two-day symposium is for librarians, teachers, parents and anyone who enjoys children’s literature. Noncredit registration is $89 for Friday, $119 for Thursday or $159 for both days. Credit registration is $189 for both days. All registration packages except the noncredit, Friday-only option include one ticket for the Thursday evening banquet. Extra banquet tickets are $20 each.

The nationally acclaimed authors and illustrators presenting at the conference will host lectures, question-and-answer sessions and informal discussion groups. The presenters are as follows:

• Susan Campbell Bartoletti, author of fiction and nonfiction, chapter books and picture books. Her book, “Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler’s Shadow,” won the 2006 Newbery Honor Book award and the Siebert Award for nonfiction.

• Gennifer Choldenko, the Newbery Honor-winning author of “Al Capone Does My Shirts.” Some of her works, including “Moonstruck: The True Story of the Cow Who Jumped Over the Moon,” have been translated into more than 11 languages.

• Jessica Day George, a fantasy novel author who has written “Dragon Slippers” and its two sequels “Dragon Flight” and “Dragon Spear.”

• Brett Helquist, a BYU graduate and illustrator of Lemony Snicket’s 13 titles in “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” His illustrations have also appeared in novels, picture books, calendars, book covers, Cricket magazine and The New York Times.

• Linda Sue Park, a novelist who has written about the history and cultural elements of Korea. She was awarded a Newbery Medal for her novel, “A Single Shard.” She is the only Newbery author to have competed on the television game show “Jeopardy!”

• Jerry Pinkney, winner of five Caldecott Honor Medals for “Mirandy and Brother Wind,” “The Talking Eggs,” “John Henry,” “The Ugly Duckling” and “Noah’s Ark.” Pinkney has illustrated children’s books for 45 years.

The Provo City Library and the BYU Bookstore, the Department of Teacher Education, the Harold B. Lee Library and the Division of Continuing Education are the symposium’s sponsors.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
