BYU hosts Sperry Symposium on the Scriptures Oct. 25 and 26

Elder L. Aldin Porter, General Authority Emeritus of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, and Andrew C. Skinner, dean of Religious Education at Brigham Young University, will be featured speakers at the 31st annual Sidney B. Sperry Symposium on the Scriptures, to be held on the BYU campus Friday and Saturday (Oct. 25 and 26).

This year's symposium is titled "Go Ye Into All The World: Messages Of The New Testament Apostles." The keynote address, given by Elder Porter and titled "He is Risen," will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the Joseph Smith Building (JSB) Auditorium.

From there, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m., the lectures will continue in the JSB Auditorium and in the nearby Martin Building, with five concurrent sessions scheduled.

On Saturday, lectures will begin at 9 a.m. in the JSB Auditorium and the Martin Building. The symposium will wrap-up at 11 a.m. with a lecture by Skinner, "Peter the Chief Apostle: His Life and Ministry." Other presenters include members of BYU's Religious Education faculty as well as the Church Educational System, BYU-Hawaii, BYU faculty from other departments and other Church scholars.

The general objectives of the symposium are to increase Gospel knowledge and strengthen individual testimonies. It is hoped that the material presented will be an important supplement to the 2003 Gospel Doctrine curriculum of the Church of Jesus Christ.

There is no cost for admission or registration required. For more information or to obtain a copy of the symposium schedule, contact Patty Smith, Religious Education, (801) 422-3611.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

November 04, 2025
BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
