BYU hosts National Engineers Week activities Feb. 24

In honor of 2011 National Engineers Week, the Brigham Young University Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology will host activities for middle and high school students Thursday, Feb. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 2 p.m.

The day’s events will include tours, competitions, interactive displays and the EngTech Expo. These events are also open to the public, and admission is free.

Tours of the science, engineering and technology areas of campus will begin at 9:10 a.m., showcasing a different part of the college every hour until 2 p.m. The tours will originate from the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court. The Streamliner and the BYU Racing Lab are part of the tours.

The college will host competitions based on engineering principles such a Lego Mindstorm Challenge, or a paper airplane-, tower- or boat-building competition. There will be a college-aged competition level and a level for middle and high school students. Competitions will be in 3220 WSC.

Students will also see interactive exhibits and hands-on demonstrations celebrating engineering and technology at the EngTech Expo. Visitors can view everything from space rockets to artificial hearts, including award-winning animation and BYU’s electric racecar. Exhibits will be on display in the WSC Garden Court throughout the day.

Schools can also request online to have BYU engineering clubs visit a classroom and give a 10- to 15-minute interactive presentation in their area of expertise.

For school registration, a full schedule of events and details, visit etweek.et.byu.edu. For more information about National Engineers Week, visit eweek.org.
