BYU hosts Intermuse Academy 10th Anniversary June 18

The Brigham Young University School of Music will host the Intermuse Academy 10th Anniversary Concert Friday, June 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bonneville Stake Center, 85 S. 900 E. in Provo.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

The concert will feature the Intermuse Academy choir and the Utah Baroque Ensemble singing works by Tallis, Schütz, Mendelssohn, Telemann, Kodály and Bárdos. The choirs will sing separately and together, forming a choir of about 100 voices.

The program will also feature the Richards Family Chamber Ensemble, which will perform a work for strings and piano by Robert Schumann.

Each year, professional music educators and classroom teachers come to BYU for two weeks of intensive training in music teaching based on the principles of Hungarian composer, educator, linguist and humanitarian Zoltan Kodály.

Teachers attend the academy, founded by Jerry L. Jaccard, associate professor of music education at BYU, for three summers in order to obtain certification in Kodály pedagogy and musicianship. The choral concert is the culminating event for summer course work.

Kodály's philosophy of music teaching from the youngest ages up through college years is gaining tremendous international momentum. BYU's Intermuse Academy, the only training program of its kind in the Intermountain West and one of only a handful in North America, hopes to introduce the philosophy to Utah public and private schools.

Lenke Igó, head of the solfege/theory faculty at the prestigious Bela Bartók Conservatory of Music in Budapest, Hungary, will conduct the 40-person academy choir.

She is the former co-conductor of the Hungarian Radio-Television Children's Chorus and is a frequent guest lecturer in music education programs in the United States, Europe and in Korea.

The Utah Baroque Ensemble is under the direction of Martha Sargent, a faculty member of the academy and a principal oboist with the Utah Valley Symphony.

For more information, call Jerry L. Jaccard at (801) 422-3778.
