BYU hosts Healthy Relationships Conference Feb. 22

Sponsored by Women’s Services and Resources

Flirting, dating and engagement will be some of the topics discussed at the Healthy Relationships Conference sponsored by Brigham Young University Women’s Services and Resources Thursday, Feb. 22, from 2-7 p.m. in the Varsity Theatre.

Admission to the conference will be free, and the public is welcome to attend.

The event will begin with “The Art of Flirting,” presented by Niwako Yamawaki, assistant professor of psychology. Yamawaki will use extensive research on gender roles to discuss body language and facial expressions, among other aspects of flirting.

Jeffry Larson of the School of Family Life will then address “The Rules of Engagement,” focusing on recognizing red flags in relationships prior to marriage.

Other topics of discussion will include strengthening relationships, communication and surviving the first year of marriage.

“Female students hear a lot about dating and marriage, but there are many uncertainties about what to do,” said LaNae Valentine, director of Women’s Services and Resources. “We want to provide young women with the tools and information necessary for them to make the best choices concerning this topic.”

Women’s Services and Resources seeks to empower and strengthen women with knowledge and self-worth by providing them with timely information and advice on the issues surrounding them.
