BYU hosts A. Dean Larsen Book Collecting Conference March 29-30

Deadline for registration Friday, March 16.

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections division of Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library will host the A. Dean Larsen Book Collecting Conference Thursday and Friday, March 29-30, in room 1130 of the library.

Registration information is available online at sc.lib.byu.edu/events/bookconference2007/registration.html. Participants may also register over the phone by calling (801) 422-3514 or by visiting Special Collections on the library’s first level. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 16.

The conference will begin with Thursday' "Bookbinding: A Hands-on Experience Creating a Personal 16th-Century Italian Paper Binding," to be presented by Mark Pollei. The session will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is available only to registered attendees.

On Friday, participants will choose four seminars to attend from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The sessions include "'A Proclamation from the Lord': Broadsides, Posters and Handbills in the Print Culture of Mormonism," "Fake-Similes or Fact-Similes: A Selection from BYU's Collection of Facsimiles of World-Famous Medieval Manuscripts" and "Songs of the Heart: Collecting Sacred and Popular Mormon Music," among others.

The A. Dean Larsen Book Collecting Conference is named in memory of the late associate university librarian who died in 2002. During his 40 years at BYU, Larsen assisted in creating the library's collections of Walt Whitman, Louisa May Alcott, Robert Burns and Mormon Americana. After he retired, Larsen and his wife, Jean, donated their personal collection of more than 1,800 books, pamphlets, maps, photographs and postcards of Yellowstone National Park, now called the Larsen Yellowstone Collection.

For more information, contact Special Collections at (801) 422-3514.
