The Brigham Young University Campus Education Week 2003, "Family: Central to the Creator's Plan," will be conducted Monday through Friday, Aug. 18-22, at locations throughout the BYU Provo campus.
The event will include more than 1,000 classes, a devotional address by Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and more than 70 classes for youth age 14 and older.
The conference will also feature 172 returning faculty favorites plus 30 new presenters addressing such topics as leadership, genealogy, finance, family and marriage, education, communication, music, religion and scores of other topics.
Classes scheduled for Aug. 18 will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classes Tuesday through Friday, Aug. 19-22 will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:25 p.m. Individuals can obtain information on class schedules, registration, broadcast sessions, parking or other details at http://educationweek.byu.edu.
During Campus Education Week, 500 to 600 volunteers are needed to serve as hosting staff. Complimentary registration will be given to those who can provide this volunteer service. For more information about volunteering, please call the Campus Education Week office at (801) 378-2087.
According to Neil Carlile, director of Campus Education Week, "This year's theme, 'Family: Central to the Creator's Plan' was selected to emphasize the importance of marriage, family and family life at a time when these institutions are under significant attack from the world. The theme is also intended to support the major emphasis that the Church of Jesus Christ places on the family."
Elder M. Russell Ballard will be the speaker at a devotional at 11:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the Marriott Center. Elder Ballard will speak on the theme of the conference with emphasis on the responsibilities of parenthood. The devotional is open to the public and is free of charge.
Campus Education Week will feature several fine arts performances at the Harris Fine Arts Center Tuesday through Friday evenings. Steve and Lisa James will join a grand cast of award-winning performers to celebrate family through the arts in "Family Center Stage." The powerful and exciting dance musical "West Side Story" will be presented by Orem's SCERA Productions; and a group of eight instrumentalists, "Enoch Train," winners of eight Pearl Awards, will play some ninety instruments in a delightful performance of well-known folk music.
Tickets at $8 for all performances go on sale Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the Harris Fine Arts Ticket Office.
In addition, all Education Week participants are invited to meet the BYU football team on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium. A Youth Dance (only for youth who have registered for Campus Education Week) will also be held on Aug. 21, from 8 to 11 p.m. in the south concourse of LaVell Edwards Stadium.
In an effort to extend educational opportunities to more Church members, BYU and the Church Educational System will broadcast portions of Campus Education Week programs over the Church satellite system, KBYU-TV, the BYU-Television satellite network and at http://educationweek.byu.edu for Internet audio and video streaming. The broadcast will be sent to the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico and Central and South America.
The Church of Jesus Christ satellite and KBYU-TV (Channel 11 in Utah) broadcasts will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, through Friday, Aug. 22.
