BYU hosts Black History Month events in February

Black History Month at Brigham Young University will begin its celebrations with Darius Gray and Margaret Young who will speak about black Mormon pioneers Thursday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. in 3222 Wilkinson Student Center.

In their book, "Standing on the Promise," Gray and Young take the reader down the paths of black pioneers from the early 19th century to the present day.

Other activities and events planned for Black History month include:

Friday, Feb. 11 - Students may enjoy refreshments and a relaxed evening with "Blues Night and Poetry Jam" at 8:30 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom. Tickets cost $3 and are sold at the door.

Tuesday Feb. 15 and Wednesday Feb. 16 - A film titled "Africans in America" will be shown from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. both nights in 3380 WSC.

Thursday, Feb. 17 - Speaker Scott Ferrin will give a presentation on Charles Hamilton Houston in 3211 WSC from 11 a.m. until noon.

Tuesday, Feb. 22 - The Black Student Union will meet the Lost Boys of the Sudan in the WSC Terrace at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 26 - The African American Children's Fair will take place from 1-5 p.m. in the WSC Garden with workshops for both parents and children.
