The BYU Rugby team is vying for its sixth national title as it prepares to face-off against University of California at Berkeley (Cal) in the national rugby championship game, the Penn Mutual Varsity Cup. The championship game will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m., at BYU's South Field. Tickets are now on sale at varsitycup.us/tickets. The match will also be broadcast live on the NBC Sports Network.
"We're once again excited to be in the final," said Head Coach David Smyth. "We're looking forward to the challenge, and we're working hard to prepare for it."
An extramural team at BYU, the Men's Rugby team has won the Varsity Cup national championship five times since 2009, and every year since 2012. This 2016 game will be a championship rematch between BYU and Cal. BYU beat Cal in the last three years of championship matches.
About the Varsity Cup
The Varsity Cup features fourteen of the most recognized and accomplished collegiate rugby programs in the country vying for the right to be named the Varsity Cup National Collegiate Champion. The fourteen Varsity Cup teams are the U.S. Air Force Academy, Brigham Young University, the University of California, Dartmouth College, the U.S. Naval Academy, Notre Dame, the University of California, Los Angeles, Central Washington University, Arizona State and Arkansas State. In the 33 years of the collegiate rugby championship play 31 of the collegiate national champions have come from one of the fourteen Varsity Cup teams. In total, a Varsity Cup program has played for the collegiate title in every year of the championship’s existence except for 1984.
