BYU to host "Faculty Dance Works" concerts March 1-2

The Brigham Young University Department of Dance will present "Faculty Dance Works," a program of choreographic works and performances by faculty, Friday and Saturday, March. 1-2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building.

All tickets are $6. For tickets, visit the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or byuarts.com/tickets. Children aged six and above will be admitted with ticket.

The performance will feature eight performance pieces with varying themes presented in choreographed dances and video presentations.

The show opens with Shayla Bott’s “Elan Vital,” a ballet based on Georges Seurat’s famous painting “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” Next, Caroline Prohosky’s Asian-inspired dance “A Prayer in the East” will be presented.

The program continues with Jiamin Huang’s “Props Sequence,” a piece that explores the use of traditional Chinese dance props in contemporary dance. Following that, Pat Debenham will present “I Am My Mother and My Father,” a tribute to his parents and his wife’s parents comprised of two interconnected solos.

Next, Karen Jersen will present “Morning Jog,” a dance film illustrating the great lengths a mother will go to keep her children, and herself, entertained. Kate Monson’s “Fossils and Fishes,” a dance exploring the unavoidability of the passing of time, will then be presented.

Concluding the performance will be a film of a young couple dealing with reality and romance by Caroline Prohosky titled “Nocturne” and Lisa Stoddard’s piece “Different Perspectives,” a dance about the power of perspectives in everyday life.

The production staff for “Faculty Dance Works” includes Nathan Balser and Kori Wakamatsu, artistic directors; Benjamin Sanders, production manager; Marianne Ohran, lighting designer; Troy Sales, sound designer; Ron Nuttall, dance medicine; and Julie Brigham, poster design.
