BYU to host annual Women's Conference, "In the Strength of the Lord," April 30-May 1

Selected sessions to be broadcast May 14-15

The Brigham Young University Women’s Conference, co-sponsored by the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will feature instructional sessions and a service event for women Thursday and Friday, April 30-May 1.

Sandra Rogers, BYU international vice president and chair of the Women’s Conference Committee, will introduce this year’s theme, “In the Strength of the Lord,” at the conference’s opening session Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Marriott Center. The conference will conclude with a session presented by Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Friday at 3:45 p.m.

“Women attend the conference to be spiritually uplifted and to feel strengthened by other women who share common values and face similar challenges,” Rogers said. “This year’s theme is repeated throughout the scriptures as people have had the ability to face whatever they needed to in life when they did it in the strength of the Lord.”

Registration is $47, or $27 for one day. If purchased on or before Friday, April 3, registration is $40, or $23 for one day. BYU faculty, staff and students with a BYU ID are eligible for a reduced registration of $15 for the full conference or $8 for either Thursday or Friday.

Registration may be completed by phone at (801) 422-8925, online at womensconference.byu.edu or in person in the Harman Building lobby weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Women and men 16 and older may register for the conference. Logistical and safety constraints on campus no longer allow accommodations for nursing infants and young children in any conference session, including at the Marriott Center, the residence halls and all Thursday night activities.

The Thursday evening concert at 8 p.m. in the Marriott Center will feature well-known LDS recording artists Hilary Weeks, Eclipse and Jenny Oaks Baker. The music from “Reflections of Christ” will be performed by Jason Barney, Clyde Bawden and Freddy Ashby. The evening will also include a special appearance by coach Larry Gelwix, the inspiration behind the film “Forever Strong.”

Throughout the two-day conference, more than 200 presenters will provide nearly 100 sessions, with up to 15 sessions to choose from each hour. Some of this year’s notable presenters include Camille Fronk Olson, associate professor of ancient scripture at BYU; Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president; and other members of the Relief Society and Primary general presidencies.

Session topics center on the conference theme, home, family, marriage, service, gospel doctrine, missionary work and education — all discussed from a gospel perspective and directed toward women. Each day, three sessions will be given in Spanish, with native speakers as presenters.

Hundreds of women will gather to participate in the Thursday evening service projects for a “Joy Beyond Measure” in the Richards Building and the Smith Fieldhouse from 5 until 8:30 p.m. Assembling newborn, school and hygiene kits for the LDS Humanitarian Center are three of the 24 service projects that will be available.

In the past 10 years, Women’s Conference participants have produced more than a million items to bless the lives of others, including 371,425 hygiene kits, 509,200 packets for nonprofit agencies and 145,200 food boxes.

For those looking for ways to continue serving after Women’s Conference is over, sharing stations will be set up in the Richards Building during the service activity. More than 50 exhibitors will share their ideas on loving, serving, teaching and helping others in a “trade show of service ideas.”

Parking for the conference will be available in the lots north and northeast of the Marriott Center, with overflow parking in the southeast lot. Courtesy vans will be available to transport participants to campus sites, with preference given to seniors and those with disabilities.

Delayed broadcasts of selected sessions will be shown Thursday, May 14, and Friday, May 15, on BYUTV, KBYU-TV and byubroadcasting.org.

Sessions to be rebroadcast Thursday, May 14, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. MDT include “Spiritual Strength in Challenging Times” by Camille Fronk Olson; “‘I Love to See the Temple’: Temple Worship in Our Life” by Carol Hillam and Elaine S. Dalton; “‘I Can Do All Things Which Strengtheneth Me’: Facing Challenges in the Strength of the Lord” by Jana P. Staples and Cheryl C. Lant; and “‘You’ve Seen Our Sacrifice; Come After Us’: Examples of Strength from Kirtland, Missouri, Winter Quarters and Our Own Day” by Kathy S. Andersen and Ann M. Dibb.

Sessions to be rebroadcast Friday, May 15, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight MDT include “Nourishing and Protecting Home and Family” by Julie B. Beck; “‘With All the Feeling of a Tender Parent’: Parenting Lessons from the Book of Mormon” by Sharon G. Samuelson and President Cecil O. Samuelson; “‘True Enduring Happiness’: Centering Our Lives on Christ” by Bonnie Sellers Hammond and Elder F. Melvin Hammond; “‘Stand in Awe and Be Still’: Spiritual Receptiveness” by Susan Jones and Barbara Thompson; and the conference’s closing session by Elder L. Tom Perry.
