BYU honors outstanding faculty, staff at Annual University Conference

Brigham Young University President Cecil O. Samuelson honored some of the university's most outstanding faculty and staff members during the Annual University Conference on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

C. Arden Pope III, recipient of the Mary Lou Fulton Professorship and economics professor in the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences, was given the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. This honor, BYU's most prestigious faculty award, is provided through the Karl G. Maeser Scholarship Society. Recipients must demonstrate clear superiority in both scholarship and teaching.

Pope, who is internationally recognized for his research on the economic impact of pollution, will deliver the 2006 Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecture at the forum assembly scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

Carri P. Jenkins, assistant to the President for University Communications, was presented the Ben E. Lewis Management Award. Jenkins, who was named to the President's Council winter semester, was praised for managing and encouraging her staff with genuine loyalty and for being an advocate for their professionalism and standing at the university.

Peggy I. Erickson, executive secretary for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, received the Fred A. Schwendiman Performance Award honoring her exemplary contributions to the university through consistent and superior service. She is noted in the department for her outstanding mentoring of student employees.

Other faculty and staff honored were:

  • Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Research and Creative Arts Award — David W. Embley, Computer Science; David L. McPherson, Communication Disorders; and Paul B. Savage, Chemistry and Biochemistry.

  • Karl G. Maeser Professional Faculty Excellence Award—Susan Cockayne, Microbiology and Molecular Biology.

  • Karl G. Maeser General Education Professorship — Ilona Klein, French and Italian; and J. Ward Moody, Physics and Astronomy.

  • Abraham O. Smoot Citizenship Award — Francis R. Nordmeyer, Chemistry and Biochemistry.

  • Wesley P. Lloyd Award for Distinction in Graduate Education — Douglas E. Prawitt, Accountancy.

  • Alumni Professorship Award — R. Ward Rhees, Physiology and Developmental Biology.

  • Phi Kappa Phi Award—Jacqueline S. Thursby, English.

  • Part-Time Faculty Excellence Award — Patti B. Collings, Statistics.

  • University Fellowship — Matthew S. Holland, Political Science; Mary Anne Prater, Counseling Psychology and Special Education; John F. Hall, Humanities, Classics and Comparative Literature; and Duke S. Rogers, Integrative Biology.

  • Alcuin Fellowship — Juliana Boerio-Goates, Chemistry and Biochemistry; Jaren S. Hinckley, Music; Alan F. Keele, Germanic and Slavic Languages; Darl Larsen, Theatre and Media Arts; Roy W. Silcox, Physiology and Developmental Biology; and Ronald E. Terry, Chemical Engineering.

    Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

    For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
