BYU Homecoming 2003 promises to "Never Stand Still"

When Howard S. McDonald accepted the invitation to serve as Brigham Young University's sixth president, he was advised to "never stand still" in his new role.

That charge applies to us today and is the theme for Homecoming 2003. McDonald is being honored as a BYU founder in a week that includes opening ceremonies, barbecues, noonday activities, baby pageants, games, parades, a Homecoming Spectacular and more.

The week will begin Oct. 7 and continue through Oct. 11.

Opening ceremonies begin Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center followed by a kick off party and free lunch at the Wilkinson Student Center. Later that evening, groups will depart at 6:30 p.m. for the annual Hike and Light the "Y." Anyone interested can get a shuttle after meeting in front of Jamba Juice in the WSC.

Homecoming continues Wednesday, Oct. 8, with noonday student activities in the WSC Terrace and a baby pageant from 6 to 8 p.m., also in the Terrace.

Thursday, Oct. 9, events include the College Honored Alumni Lecture Series at 11 a.m. at various locations throughout campus, noonday activities and the football game against Colorado State University at 8 p.m. in Edwards Stadium.

Noonday activities are also scheduled Friday, Oct. 10, along with a 5:30 p.m. dinner in the WSC Ballroom. Homecoming Spectacular will honor the Big Band era of the '40s at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center. Additionally, several reunions and dances are planned.

Homecoming concludes on Saturday, Oct. 11, with a day of activities beginning at 8:45 a.m. for the Kid's Fun Run and a 9:30 a.m. 5K Cougar Run. A free pancake breakfast will be served beginning at 9 a.m. at the Maeser stairs, the Creamery on 9th, the Sinclair Station on the southeast corner of campus and the Botany Pond. The annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. from the Marriott Center's east parking lot followed at 1 p.m. with True Blue football at Helaman Field. A second evening of Homecoming Spectacular as well as reunions and dances will conclude the annual event.
