BYU Harold B. Lee Library exhibit commemorates 9/11 attacks

Frank McEntire’s “Spontaneous Memorial” on display until Oct. 3

Brigham Young University students and faculty as well as community members will have the opportunity to remember the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by viewing artist Frank McEntire’s “Spontaneous Memorial” on display in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium gallery until Oct. 3.

“Spontaneous Memorial” is a participatory commemorative that allows viewers to write their own impressions of Sept. 11 and its ongoing consequences, making them a permanent part of the exhibit, according to McEntire.

Impressions are written on one of 3,000 tags, 2,000 of which contain a life sketch of a 9/11 victim. These life sketches were taken from the New York Times project, “Portraits of Grief.”

Already displayed at Utah Valley University in 2004, the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial in Boise, Idaho in 2005, the Salt Lake Downtown Library Gallery in 2006 and the Utah Arts Council’s Rio Gallery in 2007, the memorial will continue to travel to different locations each September through the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

With each move, something new will be added to the exhibit, said McEntire. The 2008 addition is a 16-by-9 foot grid of more than 70 images.
