BYU graduate student wins international vocal competition

A Brigham Young University master of vocal performance student received first-place honors and $10,000 in the first-ever International Chinese Vocal Competition in New York City.

Mo Li, who is studying with BYU faculty member Lawrence Vincent, received the top spot after competing against more than 100 professional Chinese singers from 20 countries spanning five continents in three rounds of competition on Oct. 15-17.

The competition was held in the Kaufmann Concert Hall and was sponsored by the Chinese television station New Tang Dynasty Television. The purpose of the contest was to promote traditional Chinese culture.

Competitors were divided into four divisions: female traditional Chinese folk singing, male traditional Chinese folk singing, female bel canto and male bel canto, which is the division Li competed in.

For more information, contact Lawrence Vincent at (801) 422-3165.
