BYU freshmen urged to enter Summer Reading Essay Contest

Deadline for submissions Friday, Nov. 16

Brigham Young University students could win $400 for writing an essay on the theme “The Words We Live By” and submitting it to the Summer Reading Essay Contest.

The essays can be written in any style but cannot be more than 750 words long. Students are encouraged to choose the format that best expresses how they think and learn. The deadline for submission is Friday, Nov. 16.

In addition to the $400 grand prize, students who submit exceptional essays could also win BYU Bookstore gift cards, and anyone who submits an essay will receive a candy bar or a coupon for free ice cream.

Sponsored by the BYU Office of First Year Experience, the contest is based on this year’s summer reading program book selection, “The Words We Live By,” an introduction to the U.S. Constitution by award-winning author Linda R. Monk.

The summer reading program was established to give incoming freshman an academic topic to talk about when they arrived at BYU. This year’s book was chosen because it focuses on constitutional issues—things freshman would be exposed to during American Heritage classes and the forum addresses of U.S. Senator Harry Reid and Chief Justice John Roberts. The contest is intended to provide a culminating experience for students to reflect on everything they learned or have learned during their first semester.

Copies of the book can be purchased for $10 from the BYU Bookstore, yubookstore.com.
