BYU food science professor honored by Purdue University

Purdue University recently honored the chair of Brigham Young University’s Department of Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science for his outstanding achievements.

Oscar Pike was presented with one of four Outstanding Food Science Awards on Thursday, Dec. 6. Pike was the only person from academia to receive the award, as the three other awards went to individuals in the food industry.

Pike received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in food science from BYU and his doctorate in food science from Purdue. His research focuses on the development of practical methods for controlling and mitigating environmental effects to extend the shelf-life of foods during distribution and long-term storage.

Members of Purdue’s food science faculty created the recognition in 2000 to pay tribute to those who have established an outstanding and unique record of excellence in industry, academic, government or other endeavors related to food science. Recipients are nominated by faculty and staff and voted upon by the department’s Primary Promotions Committee.

For more information, call the Purdue Department of Food Science at (765) 494-6303.
